With an aim to boost the rural economy and to foster women empowerment in the state, a total of 11,418 self-help groups (SHGs) registered under the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) will be brought under the Rural Development Agency (RDA), Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Kala Mandir-Ponda on the occasion of the State Cooperative Awards distribution programme on Tuesday where he shared the dais with Minister for Cooperatives Govind Gaude, Secretary Sunil Garg and RCS Arvind Kutkar.

The Chief Minister said that unnecessary confusion is created by registering SHGs under RCS and to prevent it, it is important to register all SHGs under RDA, which is the right agency to handle them.

“Through RDA, the government can give Rs 1 lakh assistance each to SHGs under the National Rural Livelihood Mission for which the government has formed village-level organisations to facilitate the same. SHGs have become an important aspect of rural economy and if these groups are registered under RDA, it will be easy for the government to give proper direction to boost the rural economy and also to foster women empowerment,??? the Chief Minister said.

He said that the state government is very sensitive about people’s needs and has been appreciating the hard work of the people in various fields adding, “May it be from the police, healthcare sector, teachers or cooperative sector, the government is taking note of each and everyone who is doing awonderful work.???

Minister Govind Gaude said more people should be a part of the cooperative sector so as to strengthenit further.

On the occasion, Goa State Cooperative Awards for the year 2019-20 and 2020-21 were presented to individuals and societies for their contributionto the field.
