Vedanta, on Monday,
said that it has suspended production at its Amona-Navelim plant in view of the
ongoing coronavirus pandemic.  The
company said that it is halting Goa operations for three days in view of the
extension in ‘Janata Curfew’ imposed by the state government.  “All operations at the plant in Amona-Navelim
have been suspended including that of blast furnaces, except for one waste heat
power plant, which is required to provide electrical power for all cooling
water pumps at the plant (for safety reasons) and emergency services and
for which we need to keep one coke oven battery running to provide waste heat
for power plant,� said the company in a release issued here.



With the state extending the ‘Janata Curfew,’ Vedanta has
decided to carry out a planned shutdown of its production facilities.  The company began the shutdown process on the
night of March 22. 



“Proper furnace shutdown is critical for the safety of
the equipment, people and communities around and to avoid any safety issues. We
are doing it in consultation with statutory authorities,� said the
release.  The company added that it is
fully committed to the safety of its workers and surrounding communities with
full compliance to the health protocols in the wake of the COVID-19 threat.



The plant in Amona
produces mainly pig iron. It also has a coke and power plant. The power plant
is the largest private power producer in the state. About 50 per cent of the
power generated by the plant is sold to the state viz to the electricity
department grid. Vedanta’s operations in Goa include mining and manufacture of
pig iron. Mining operations are closed now due to a Supreme Court order
pertaining to all iron ore mining in the state.
